Glossary of Terms

The following is a non-exhaustive list of terminology that is used throughout the website. Anyone is welcome to edit this post to include new terms that they think should be added, but effort should be made to try and keep it in alphabetical order.

  • Classification: One of the component elements of a hero class. It summarizes the general level of usefulness that the specific hero has to the program. See also: Hero class.

  • Documented hero: A hero who is legally recognized in the eyes of a government. Note that being on the Registry does not make a hero documented. See also: Undocumented hero.

  • Hero: A buzzword used by the registry to refer to an individual with some type of enhancement, from super strength to cyborg physiology to crime-fighting tech and beyond. Does not imply specific moral standing. See also: Powered Individual; Registry.
  • Hero class: The general category that heroes are sorted into based on usefulness to the program. Its format typically is Classification-specialization. (Ex. “Class: Charlie-Balanced.”) Links: About Hero Class. See also: Classification; Specialization.
  • Heroes For Hire: A program owned by Heroes Incorporated that aims to educate, employ and otherwise make money off of the contracting of heroes to individuals and governments. Often referred to as the registry. Note that the name will be italicized in most cases and that the “for” in the name is capitalized. See also: Registry; Heroes Incorporated.
  • Heroes Incorporated: The private business that owns the Heroes For Hire program. They do not administrate the program itself, but do have final say over just about anything the program does. See also: Registry; Heroes For Hire.

  • OOC or Out Of Character: The term used to designate that the text following is written from the viewpoint of someone outside the fourth wall. Typically, OOC posts and pages are limited to the Writing Information section.

  • PII or Powered Individual Incident: An incident involving a hero to some degree. Can simply be a jaywalking incident or a full-blown world domination scheme. Levels are assigned to these incidents in order to categorize them based on factors such as potential injuries and public relations impact.
  • Powered Individual: The United Nations’ official term for heroes. Includes the full definition of the Heroes For Hire program’s equivalent term. See also: Hero.
  • Project: A set of posts and pages detailing a particular goal and its method of accomplishment. For example, a project dedicated to finding a home for all of the homeless heroes in Monolith City. Link: Registry Projects.

  • Registry:
    • The list of heroes that the Heroes For Hire program manages in order to keep tabs on potential hires for their cause. Entries in the registry include full relevant details on the individual.
    • A term sometimes used to refer to the Heroes For Hire program. See also: Heroes For Hire.

  • Specialization: One of the component elements of a hero class. It summarizes the primary way a hero contributes to the registry’s usefulness. See also: Hero class.

  • Undocumented hero: A hero not legally recognized in the eyes of a government. Includes vigilante heroes. Note that being on the Registry does not make a hero documented. See also: Documented hero.
